Atlanta Federal Penitentiary
Located in downtown Atlanta, the United States Penitentiary of Atlanta holds approximately 1,900 male prisoners. It is a medium security prison. It was initially built in 1899. In 1987, a group of Cuban detainees rioted because they were afraid they would be repatriated to Cuba. The riot lasted for 11 days and involved 100 hostages. A substantial portion of the prison was burned during the riots.
