The Cascade Heights neighborhood is located in southwest Atlanta. The neighborhood has a reputation of having a large population of elite African-Americans. In the 1960s, it was a predominantly white neighborhood. In 1962, the mayor of Atlanta attempted to build a wall that closed Cascade Heights from the Peyton Road access to curtail the number of black home shoppers. It was soon ruled unconstitutional by the courts and torn down.
This neighborhood is home to Westview Cemetery, the largest cemetery in the southeast. It currently holds over 100,000 graves, and only about half the cemetery’s land is currently in use.
