A ghoul is a mortal that has drunk the blood of a Kindred (known as vitae). This gives the ghoul increased physical abilities and retards aging. Sometimes, it even grants a small amount of other vampiric powers. However, this act also forms a Blood Bond, and the ghoul eventually becomes linked to their Kindred master, or domitor. Drinking the vampire blood becomes euphoric and intoxicating, and the Blood Bond itself creates a deep emotional attachment to the Kindred. Without a regular intake of vitae, a ghoul loses all of their special abilities. Most ghouls, therefore, are vassals of a Kindred.
The ghouls themselves are used and viewed differently, depending on the Kindred and their clan. To some, a ghoul is nothing more than disposal cannon fodder. To others, the ghoul may have been a brief fling of mistaken passion, only to be discarded. Occasionally, a ghoul may be considered a helpful individual, even if not as good as Kindred. Some ghouls are valued, others abused. But the general thought is that ghouls are indebted creatures, and should be subservient to their Kindred domitor.
