The Virginia Highlands (sometimes just called the Highlands by Atlantans) is centered around the intersection of Virginia and North Highland Avenues, and runs along Piedmont Park. It is home to many eclectic and Bohemian artists. There are several restaurants, clubs, and pubs in the area. A lot of the stores sell “trendy kitsch” merchandise, such as tye-died shirts and healing crystals.
One of newest and currently in vogue spots is the night club Requiem. It’s an old Episcopalian church with a high arching ceiling and a large (but no longer functioning) pipe organ. Although no the building is longer used for its intended purpose, great attention has been given to its renovating and historical accuracy. One of the few big changes is a false floor, with speakers pointing upward underneath, making the whole building reverberate to techno music.
